MONIMBO, Nicaragua, January 13-21, 2001

As we prepare to undertake another mission to Nicaragua, it may be helpful to look at a few of the images from 2001.

The Monimbo Mission was a success.  Every department of our mission set new records for attendance, and we all saw some of the longest days of any VOSH mission.  After the dust settled, we had done 2276 eye examinations.  We dispensed 2021 prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses. We had 25 eye cataract surgeries in the Masaya hospital, 1630 medical examinations, 465 dental examinations and dispensed 41 recycled wheelchairs, canes and walkers.

Northeast Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity, NEVOSH, has steadily performed it's humanitarian mission and steadily evolved since being founded by Dr. Bob Schwartz of Annapolis, MD in 1986.

Every January for Fifteen years, a cadre of committed doctors and technicians set up a clinic at a school in Central America.  The word is spread that the gringo doctors will be in town, and thousands line up around the schoolyard in anxious anticipation.

We bring a library of 10,000 pair of donated eyeglasses.  Northeast VOSH has expanded from an initial focus on eye examination and optical dispensary to include a Medical contingent, a Dental clinic, a pharmacy of donated meds, and an off-site cataract clinic, held at an area hospital.

The services are available at a greatly reduced cost, NEVOSH collects 10 Nicaraguan Cordobas, or about one US dollar, from each patient.  This money is use to pay local translators, and to help defray the daily costs of running the clinic.  It is important to note that we have provisions for those without 10 Cordobas.

The VOSH doctors and students pay their own way to get to Nicaragua, cover their own room and board, and volunteer their services for the clinic.  There is a scholarship program in place to cover the airfare of some optometric students.
