We couldn't begin to contemplate a mission without effective translation. Each year, skilled translators pay their own way to Nicaragua, and volunteer in the effort to be sure that the problems the patients have are well understood by the doctors. In addition to travelling gringo and gringa translators, we rely heavily upon the verbal skills of bilingual locals. Many of the nicaraguan translators have made the effort to find our group and help us year after year. It is always nice to see an old friend in a foreign country, and converse to realize that the year past has brought them closer to fluency in English and yourself closer to fluency in Spanish.
Ed
Greenan, Ph D. led the translation team this year. You can ask Ed a
question in any of five languages.
Ed entrusted a most vital position to Katherine Joseph, who translated in the
operating room for Dr. Steve Grimes, MD. Steve performed
cataract surgery
at the hospital in Diriamba. Katherine was on the mission last year while
in Nicaragua with the Peace Corps setting up a co-operative bakery for the people of Vera Cruz.
Enzo Montoya traveled from California once again, adding his truly thorough
bilingual skills to our cadre.
